Today is the opening day for the Olympics. In the 80s, when the winter Olympics were in Calgary, I loved to watch all of the sports... I even recorded them onto VHS tapes... and Brian Boitano was my favorite. I also loved Paul Wylie and Christopher Bowman, who died recently. The kids have told me they're excited to watch this year's Olympics... I wonder what their favorite sports will be.

This summer, the kids have now been to three different VBS's, or Vacation Bible Schools. The first was at the church I go to, where they went on a Friday night and Saturday while I volunteered there. The second was with their grandparents (Scott's parents) south of here. The third was last night.

Our doorbell rang, and it was one of Rain's little girlfriends from down the street. She came up to me, playing with her hands, man she's grown just this summer... asking me, would it be okay if Rain and Dylan go to church with me tonight? At first I didn't pick up on the fact that it was VBS. I told her to go upstairs and ask the kids, and she did, and they said yes, they'd like to go.

I haven't seen the kids that much this summer; but I'm not going to be selfish, hoard my time with them, when they could be spending time at church with their neighborhood friends. (Sorry--I know that previous sentence was grammatically atrocious.) So when Rain came down and asked me if she could go, I said yes, and the little girl went home to eat some dinner first.

I went into the kitchen, whipping together some PB&Js for the kids to eat before they left, when it dawned on Rain. This means the three of us wouldn't be going out to dinner like we had previously planned. We can go out to dinner any time this coming week, I told her, and though she was a bit mopey, she seemed okay with that answer.

Fast-forward to about 9:30 last night, when the kids came bounding in the house. Dylan was full of smiles, and Rain was talking at about a hundred miles an hour, and I went to get the Xacti to get her story on video. They did crafts, they sang songs--and the pastor was surprised they already knew most of the songs, since they were the same as the VBS at their grandparents'. In short, they had a friggin blast. I know that I definitely made the right decision.
