I'm amused by the election strips Sinfest has posted this week. (One has the Devil running for President. Insert joke about your least-favourite candidate here.)
Seriously, I'm kind of appalled at the lack of coverage Ron Paul has been getting. Not because I want him to win. I really don't. His view of women's healthcare leaves something to be desired, and he's taken money from openly racist folks and institutions. Man is, not to put too fine a point on it, a nutjob. (I can see why he appeals to various libertarians like my bro-in-law though. You can take a look at his record--and indeed, ALL the candidates records--here: http://www.issues2000.org/…efault.htm )
But the coverage of him during the primaries was rather shitty. During one point he had more votes than Giuliani, who was listed, but Paul himself was stacked under Other.
Here Making Light covers the disparity in CNN's reporting of primary polls: http://nielsenhayden.com/…09782.html
If nothing else, this should be a wake-up call to how broken our media is regarding political candidates.
I wish I could remember the blog where I read this, but somebody was complaining about how the media seems to claim that women are going to vote with Hillary based on emotional responses, but the entire media structure surrounding the elections seems to be about the media's own emotional responses. (If I can find it again, I'll link it in a heart beat because they had some excellent points. UPDATE: It was Robin McKinley, fantasy author, who said this. Her blog is excellent and funny. Enjoy the footnotes. http://robinmckinley.livejournal.com/40402.html)
